Learning How To Forgive

By Tameka Williams-Walker

I watched a movie that had such an impact on me. It made me realize the importance of communication, of not leaving things unsaid, of forgiveness. This couple never had the chance to talk about an issue that had ripped their marriage apart; that caused them to be strangers in their own home.

Never leave things unsaid in your relationships, as you never know what can happen later.

This husband walked out of the home a bitter man and the last thing his wife saw was his back angrily walking away. He met in a car accident and died shortly afterwards and the only thing the wife kept saying was “we didn’t get to talk…I didn’t get to explain my side.”

Never leave things unsaid. Sometimes we misunderstand a situation or we assume the wrong things about someone.

God is love and he is a God of forgiveness and second chances. Do not walk away like the husband did. Stay, listen and make sure that you did not misinterpret what was said or what was done. Lack of communication or misunderstanding can cause so much unnecessary hurt in a relationship, not to mention unforgiveness and anger towards each other.

Luke 6:36 says “Be ye therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful.” Show kindness, be understanding, be forgiving, be merciful. Many times, these are the things that will make a positive change in a relationship.

Matthew 6:14 says “For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.” Nothing can destroy a relationship like unforgiveness.

Not only does unforgiveness cause relationships to deteriorate, but it affects your soul, as it starts to get eaten away by bitterness, anger and hate. Let us strive to be better, do better. Let us seek God’s face in everything we do and bestow mercy and forgiveness upon others, as he has bestowed upon us.
